Sensory Couple/The Girl Who Sees Smells Episode 16 Recap (Finale)

Yep, the finale wasn’t great but I’ve decided to simply ignore all the stupid-police moments (although you will read my rant later) and enjoy the rom-com bits.

With exciting music in the background, the team splits up and tries to find Cho Rim but to no avail.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h41m26s200

They return to the police station and check the CCTV. There, they see a man pushing a girl on a wheelchair…and then the man turns around.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h41m32s1

Yep, it is Kwon, who semi-smiles at the camera, and drives off in an ambulance.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h41m40s80 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h41m41s94 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h41m44s119 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h41m45s137

Inspector Kang tries to console Moo Gak and assures him that Cho Rim will be alright in the end. Yeom has requested to join the investigation team once again and reminds Moo Gak not to act on his own.

Kwon switches from the ambulance to his own van, but plays around with a device before placing it on the backseat along with Cho Rim.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m06s87 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m13s158

Cho Rim panics but Kwon reassures her that it’s for Moo Gak, not her.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m19s213 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m21s233 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m24s13 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m26s30

As he closes the door and walks back to his own seat, Cho Rim pulls the ring off her finger, scratches the device and its contents, then throws the ring out of the window. For a moment, it seems like Kwon catches on, but he simply drives away.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m42s190 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m40s170

Based on the circuit tvs around the areas, the police manages to track down the ambulance, but is disappointed to find it empty. Moo Gak notices the ring and picks it up quickly.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h42m50s16

He astutely picks out that the ring has some traces of something on it and requests to send it to the forensics team.

Yeom knows that Kwon has a different goal this time from kidnapping because he boldly showed his face to the camera. Indeed, Kwon brings Cho Rim to the showroom, which has the exact same layout as their new house. Cho Rim asks, “Why did you kill my parents?” Kwon realises that she has recovered her memories and she spits out, “You are a murderer! You will never be forgiven!”

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h43m03s145 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h43m06s175

Kwon notes that this is so different from the usual way she speaks, perhaps betraying a sense of disappointment or sadness.

Moo Gak receives a phone call from Kwon, who instructs him to get to Cho Rim’s old house as soon as possible.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h44m21s156 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h44m32s17

If he finds out that there is any police with him, he will send him a video of his bride’s death immediately.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h44m45s141 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h44m47s158

Yeom is in the room when Moo Gak receives the phone call, and even though Moo Gak tries to keep it under wraps, Yeom soon suspects something. Moo Gak eyes Sang Gil’s revolver, since he doesn’t have his own anymore, but Sang Gil’s appearance dashes his intention and he leaves the station (first he tries to walk, then he breaks into a run, which amuses me somewhat).

Moo Gak reaches the house and sends a photo of himself to Kwon. Kwon calls him via video call, and Moo Gak sees Cho Rim, “Cho Rim, are you okay??” Cho Rim nods, but shakes her head desperately when Moo Gak says desperately, “I will be home soon.”

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h45m19s226 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h45m21s249 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h45m25s27 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h45m40s181

Kwon tells Moo Gak to stay put at Cho Rim’s house and ends the call. He takes Cho Rim’s keys (either that, or he stole keys, or he duplicated keys) and shows Cho Rim the bomb which he intends to plant in their house, “Boom…it will be the end.” Cho Rim sobs and he consoles her, “It’s okay, you will be right after him.”

Kwon drives to the couple’s real house. In the meantime, the team tracks Moo Gak via his phone’s GPS, knowing that Kwon must have contacted Moo Gak. As Kang wonders out loud that Kwon probably told Moo Gak to stay at the house because he needed time, Yeom rushes off to get something.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h46m09s214 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h46m21s80

Kwon sets the bomb up and returns to the showroom. He video calls Moo Gak again and tells him to go his house at 3pm sharp.

Yeom returns with the forensics’ results – the substance on the ring is potassium nitrate, a component frequently found in home made bombs.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h46m41s21 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h46m43s44 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h46m46s69 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h46m47s79

As Kwon waits at the stairway of the opposite building, Moo Gak enters the password and opens the door to the flat.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h47m00s213 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h47m04s255

Kwon looks eagerly at his phone, as it turns 3pm, the room opposite blows up, to Kwon’s delight.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h47m22s175 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h47m24s195

He goes back to the showroom again and pours some substance onto a cloth, “I will not kill you that cruelly.” Just as he is about to press the cloth to Cho Rim’s face, Moo Gak comes running out from a room and gives him a flying kick. As Moo Gak tries to untie Cho Rim’s knots, Kwon stabs Moo Gak in the stomach and escapes. Moo Gak gives chase, assuring Cho Rim that Yeom will be here soon.

Haha I thought that twist was so predictable. Especially since the showroom also uses a password-locked door, and all we see is Moo Gak using the password to enter a room. Also, I guess it’s good but telling at the same time, that when Kwon returns, Cho Rim no longer looks frightened to her death.

Moo Gak follows Kwon up to the roof and they fight. Kwon lies defeated on the floor and begs Moo Gak not to take his life, “Killing me will not solve anything.”

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h48m23s19 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h48m28s69

Moo Gak puts down the pipe that he is ready to use and whack the life out of Kwon, “You deserve to die a 100 times, but because there are laws, I guess I’ll have to obey these stupid laws. You’ll be brought to justice.” He tells Kwon to turn over so that he can handcuff him. Kwon seemingly obeys by going onto his knees….and quickly throws a handful of sand in Moo Gak’s eyes. As Moo Gak stumbles, Kwon picks up the pipe and rams it into Moo Gak, forcing Moo Gak to move backwards.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h48m48s7 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h48m49s25

At the very last minute, Moo Gak makes use of the momentum and without thinking, turns such that it is Kwon who falls over.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h48m53s58 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h49m27s151

Kwon is finally dead for good.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h50m04s4

The team gathers back in the station and Moo Gak reveals that he already guessed from the video call that Cho Rim isn’t at home, because a photoframe is missing. (Although I still highly doubt that real apartments will be installed the same way as showrooms??) The explosion is simply an effect intended to mislead Kwon.

The team hilariously wonders whether Cho Rim and Moo Gak are married. Cho Rim says that they aren’t because she didn’t even get to enter the wedding hall, but Moo Gak insists that they are because she has already worn a dress.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h51m20s250 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h51m24s39

Well it’s really because they have no more money for another ceremony, now that their house is damaged. Hahaha.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h51m07s118 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h51m09s137

Now that the serial killer is over, we have another 30 minutes of happy endings.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h51m32s116 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h51m34s136

The couple enjoys their life together, with Cho Rim dictating every small little thing like the direction of the frames (wanting them to be turned sideways, but they all end up being straight any way) and the position of the armchair (at one point, under her direction, it was in front of the television. Whutttt hahahaha). Moo Gak happily and obediently follows every instructions.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h52m03s174 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h52m09s235

They finally make their bows to Cho Rim’s dad, and Cho Rim tells him that she will retain her new name, Oh Cho Rim, because he’s her father.

The couple also finally signs the marriage certificate and wonders who they should get as witnesses. For Cho Rim, she decides to ask Yeom because Moo Gak regards her as someone who has changed his life.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h52m51s137 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h52m57s201

Cho Rim’s friend offers to be a witness too, but is shooed away immediately hahaha.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h53m24s208 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h53m28s248

Cho Rim says that if she’s a guy, she would have gone for Yeom. Yeom replies that all the guys run away because she cannot help but profile them when she first met them.

Moo Gak finds the troupe leader to be the other witness because Cho Rim thinks that he has changed her life. Finding witnesses work like that?

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h53m45s166 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h53m46s172

The troupe leader has a soft spot for Cho Rim actually, and reminds Moo Gak to make Cho Rim laugh.

There is another case and the three detectives left cannot figure out what to do. Imagine Kang’s surprise when he finds out that the couple hasn’t left for their honeymoon!

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h54m01s75 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h54m06s121

The couple is in a lovey-dovey stage, and wouldn’t even let each other go.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h54m14s196 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h54m17s234 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h55m44s255 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h55m54s153

Hahaha, after they have their first kiss as a married couple, Moo Gak declares that he’s going to take his first shower as a married man. Haha.

However, Kang knocks on the door and asks Cho Rim for a favour – they need her help to see if there are any scents. Moo Gak is very disappointed when he exits from the bathroom and finds that Cho Rim has run off on an investigation.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h56m32s41 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h56m24s223

I cannot help but point out here – how can the police be so stupid? Surely, a simple case where a guy gets stabbed in his own flat is not such a complex case that it cannot be solved??

Anyway, here ensues a series of investigation which I’m going to quickly summarise – Cho Rim uses her powers to find a button under the table and the detectives use that to track down an ahjumma who admitted to killing her landlord.  Cho Rim returns home to find a very grumpy Moo Gak (who seems to be more grumpy that she did an investigation without him, not that she ran off while he was in the shower) but Moo Gak soon relents and starts tickling the poor girl.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h57m46s14 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h57m48s33 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h57m49s44 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h57m50s58

Poor couple tries to leave for their honeymoon, but is stopped by Sang Gil and Choong Do who tell them that the son has stepped up to say that HE was the one who had murdered the landlord.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h58m15s50 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h58m08s236

Moo Gak carries out the interrogation (even though he’s no longer a police officer????) and Cho Rim spies from the other room. She dumb-ly, cute-ly calls out Moo Gak’s name and tries to wave at him to get his attention when she realises something. I don’t know what to say hahaha.

After her smart detection that the son is wearing a left shoe with a strong fish scent, and a right shoe with a strong herbal scent, but the culprit in the landlord’s apartment had a strong fish scent on the right and a strong herbal scent on the left, Moo Gak quickly realises what happened and pinpoints the real culprit – it’s the guy who has recently moved in as a tenant with the son and the mother. He broke in and tried to steal from the landlord, but was discovered too early and stabbed the landlord in order to escape. The mother later came by and thought it was her son who did it, so she intentionally left a button behind to incriminate herself (a button which normal people should be able to find. You don’t need super powers for this!!)

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h58m38s27 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h58m41s56 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h58m29s196 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h58m40s42

(Surely, you don’t clap like this, together as a team, inside the interrogation room??)

The mother and son thank Cho Rim for saving them (for both of them admitted to a crime they didn’t do in order to save the other person). Cho Rim replies that it’s alright, but you can tell that she’s a little unhappy at missing the honeymoon, and Moo Gak nudges her hahaha.

The couple finally sits down for a proper meal with many dishes – turns out Cho Rim has been helping her neighbours catch thieves, litter bugs, find missing items etc and they have been rewarding her with food.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h58m56s209 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h58m58s220 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h59m03s16 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h59m09s74

Moo Gak is pleased but wonders about the rest of the food dishes which taste horrible. Well, Cho Rim cooked them…so….

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h59m24s232 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h59m26s250

The couple is soon harassed with calls from Kang and Sang Gil, and they panic, wondering if the team will really disturb them on their vacation. Hahaha.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-14h59m31s39

Yes they will, and this stupid but adorable team of detectives actually now try to use their police techniques to track the couple down. There’s so many cases which need their help! Yeom suddenly appears and tells Kang that it’s no use trying to get the couple in like that.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h00m13s207

The station has set up another special team, and she’s the one leading once again. But the couple has escaped for a bicycle vacation (since Choong Do is at the airport trying to find them).

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h00m16s239 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h00m25s67

Cho Rim starts tearing as she is thankful that she can sit there and enjoy the same scenery, the same air as Moo Gak.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h00m41s229 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h00m50s63

Moo Gak nods, and tells her that she should stop calling him Officer Choi. Exactly! She asks him to pick one, “Darling, honey, sweetheart.”

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m00s160 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m01s174

Moo Gak replies, “I love you, darling.” Cho Rim wipes her tears away, “I love you, honey.”

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m03s199vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m06s228 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m15s59

Yeom calls and later Moo Gak reveals that the special team has been set up because nine people have gone missing together.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m27s181 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m31s216 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m34s253 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m36s11

Watch both Moo Gak and Cho Rim act nonchalent – How can that be? Oh that’s nonsense. Who cares? No one’s curious about that – but they both start smiling at each other.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m41s61 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m43s86

Moo Gak turns the bicycle around, and she hops on.

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m50s149 vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m54s194

Off they go on another case-solving adventure!

vlcsnap-2015-05-22-15h01m57s222

-the end-

You know, sometimes I thank dramas for having a sucky ending (or an ending that isn’t very tight or useful) because that rids me of any drama blues. Especially if the endings are full of happy endings because then I no longer feel that insane desire to want to know more about this couple.

Anyway, didn’t really like the final showdown with Kwon. It was unnecessary and not very exciting. For a brilliant psychopath like Kwon, I thought he would have come up with something crazier than a bomb. Also, it seems slightly strange that his final target was Moo Gak and not Cho Rim, since it was always about the psychopath and the witness. Although this can perhaps be explained by his good feelings for Cho Rim, I still think that there should have been more built there. The twist was predictable and the death was okay. It’s good that he dies I guess, because he will never repent in jail and goodness knows when he will escape again (a mental breakdown in jail, as per You Who Came From The Stars, was quite satisfying though).

Also, I thought that it didn’t make sense that Cho Rim retains her sight of smells to the very end. If Moo Gak loses his senses but gains them back, then naturally, Cho Rim should lose her sight of smells. But I guess her sight of smells is the whole point of the show, and the idea is that the couple has grown to be this super power investigation duo – she with her sight of smells, and him with his deductive powers.

There is no more need for me to dwell on the stupidity of the police. Here, they aren’t treated as any capable force, or at least I hope they aren’t intended to be taken seriously. They are just tools meant to facilitate the rom-com and thrill.

For the couple, I love them till the very end. Comfortable pair, with lots of laughs (suddenly praying for release from the detectives hahaha is one of them). I have a really good impression of Shin Se Kyung and Park Yoo Chun here, and I can’t wait to see them in their other works! Although I think a huge part of their success is because of their characters’ personalities, and because they portray them well. Choi Moo Gak and Oh Cho Rim makes a fantastic couple – both are honest with each other, capable, and funny. Cho Rim’s actions are so adorable, and Moo Gak’s sudden outbursts of comedy tickle me as well.

A pity that they couldn’t carry the hype to the end, but thanks for having entertained me for many weeks!

I thoroughly enjoy the show from beginning up until episode 14 or so. When i realized that nothing was going to get solved, answered, or explained, I got a little frustrated and disappointed. What was Kwon’s reason for all the killings? Why did he aimed for those specific victims? How did he choose them? What happened to his American parents? Why did he hate talking about his adopted family? What drove him to kill? ( his puppy got kicked or what?) NOTHING was explained!!! Yes, he was a psychopath but as a drama watcher, i am not easily satisfied.
Then, they toyed around with Moo Gak and Cho Rim potential sensory loss but nothing came of it. In the end, they never lost their special ability.
Chef Kwon was an amazing character. Nam Goong Min played this roll so dang well. Abs and all. His cold, dead, calculated eyes directed the show. I just wish there were more explaination as to why he went all psychopath or explaination if he ever had a soul at all. Great show, but they could have had just a little more. A little more bang ya know?!

Totally agree..i really want to know all of the reason behind these..i am really10x dissappointed with last 2 episodes..since chef kwon 1st arrested not in the last epi,i thought the plot would tell us the story from chef kwon side…really dissappointed….

      • Yes the last two episodes went downhill for me. The only major thing keeping me up was the couple. What a pity!

    • I think that the drama did attempt to answer the questions you have raised, albeit in an unsatisfactory manner. If I’m not wrong, Kwon was abused when he was young by his American parents. I’m guessing here that he MIGHT have something to do with his parents’ death because the whole conversation with Yeom was just suspicious and full of tension. Since the abuse was bad enough for him to stop recognising people’s faces, maybe this led him to have the urge to kill, and to live vicariously through others. Since he can’t see their faces, he will have their lives.

But I’m totally in agreement with you that they miss out details like how he chose his victims (probably just haphazardly, and who was unlucky enough). The background story and history of Kwon was just dealt with very unsatisfactorily.

Indeed, Nam Goong Min was so amazing! He carried the psychopath character well. It might just have been a total flop without him. And yes yes yes to a little more bang!!

So awesome for you to answer back! I am currently watching I Love Romance 3 and let me tell you, Goong Min here is no killer lol. But i can’t take my Goong Min any either way. He needs to be calculated, well dressed, and sexy at all times. But to get back at the topic at hand, why did this show end the way it did and why did they not attempt at more?! They had such potential since the show was one of its kinds. But they opted for an easy way out. Dont blame me, i am still way too bitter at this 😭

      • Hello! I try to reply to all my comments because I LOVE reading comments! Hehe I got over the bad ending because like what I mentioned in the recap, I ‘thank’ bad endings for not giving me drama blues:P But on a serious note, yes they definitely had a lot more potential and could go way further than they did. Sometimes it felt like they took the comedy part of the rom-com genre too seriously and forgot about rules and common sense.
