Sungkyunkwan Scandal is set in Sungkyunkwan University in the late Joseon era during the reign of King Jeongjo, revolving around the exploits and love stories of four youths. When her younger brother’s illness worsens and their family is in danger of being evicted from their house for lack of money, Kim Yoon Hee enters the school under his name, disguised as a boy in her desperation to support him. That’s for the first 2 episodes. In Episode 3 and 4, Yoon Hee met some people who thought she looked very familiar but didn’t realise that she’s a girl, since she’s decked up in men’s clothes. She managed to unintentionally charm Cho Sun, who if I’m not wrong, was a prostitute, that In Soo liked. She went on with her school life, trying to survive without people finding out her secret, but she always faced a problem at night — sleeping in the same dorm as Jae Shin and Sun Joon [ who are guys ]. One day, Sun Joon got drunk and suddenly started stripping himself, not even leaving his pants on. Yoon Hee was embarrassed but managed to survive that night. The students soon learnt that Sungkyunkwan would hold an archery competition. In Soo who did not like both Yoon Hee and Sun Joon, wanted to teach Yoon Hee a lesson, so he placed an apple on top of her head and shot an arrow from a far distance away. Sun Joon arrived, though a tad too late, to move In Woo’s arm away but In Soo had already released the arrow. Luckily, Jae Shin was there to push Yoon Hee, who had fainted, away. He quickly carried her to the pharmacy, where the professor took her pulse and realised something was wrong. After she woke up, and there was no one around, he questioned Yoon Hee if she was a woman.
One of Sungkyunkwan’s strong points, in my opinion, is that the producers know exactly when to stop each episode, such that each viewer is tempted to press the button to the next episode. It didn’t matter that I might be super bored or that I didn’t understand what happened in like.. episode 3, but to have a good ending is very important because it ensures that I will continue to watch.(:
Right now, I really like Yeo Rim and Jae Shin! Actually, I like all of them! This is quite rare, considering how I only liked Shin Woo in You Are Beautiful and only second fiddles in other similar dramas. However, I really like Yeo Rim/ Yoon Ha for his playful and cheeky character, Jae Shin for his seemingly tough exterior but being very thoughtful towards Yoon Hee, and Sun Joon for always standing up for Yoon Hee. I know that Yoon Hee will almost definitely end up with Sun Joon, so it kind of makes me prematurely sad for Yeo Rim and Jae Shin already!
I was quite dubious though… Is it really true that you can tell whether one is a male or female by the pulse alone? I really like the part where Jae Shin pushed Yoon Hee away, and I love scenes where the male lead turns around and smirk or something!:P [ i.e Sun Joon ]
I’m not a fan yet, but it’s too early to say whether I will or will not be one. Knowing that Jae Shin is very good at archery definitely played a major role in roping me in to continue watching, since I was deeply reminded of Jumong:P I am kind of confused about the plot though, like what is the king trying to find, and what has all of this got to do with Yoon Hee’s father?
